Some Days I Just Feel Overwhelmed
Like all other small business owners I know, I’m overloaded right now.
There’s always something to do for a client project. Blog posts to write, social media marketing stuff to message out and a new online program I want to pull together.
And don’t even get me started with my personal life.
We’re winding down with the last weeks of school which means the last book report, finishing the science fair project and there was that thing my son Jake brought home yesterday from school that needs to be done by next week.
Some days I just feel overwhelmed with my life.
If Jake isn’t getting ready for a baseball game, I’m the taxi driver to take him somewhere. In between all that, I’m supposed to cook a healthy dinner, keep my house clean and handle everything else in my home that a single mom needs to do to keep this place running.
Truth is – I’m a lousy cook and I bake a lot of chicken every week so we can avoid those frozen dinners. And I’ve had a load of towels in sitting in my dryer for 3 days. I keep turning it back on, thinking I’ll fold them but you know how that one goes.
Life of a Small Business Owner
For the most part, I love what I do.
I get excited creating new programs. I know where I want to go and the steps I need to take to get me there. I know that nothing great happens overnight and I’m willing to do the work to get it done.
I’m in it for the long haul. I get it.
But some days it’s hard to get into that positive mindset to keep everything going.
It’s like when we do that thing when we compare ourselves to others. We can talk all day long about not comparing the beginning of our story to someone’s middle — but we do.
Or when we hear or read a compliment about ourselves. We say ‘thank you’ but our mind wanders to something else. We start to question ourselves, “Did she really mean that? What if she really said that to be nice but thinks I’m a fake or clueless or don’t know my stuff?”
We know we shouldn’t let those negative thoughts creep in when something good happens — but we do.
And such is the life of a small business owner.
It would be easy to tell ourselves to power through, get back into your routine and do the work that’s jumping off the page in your planner. But some days, just getting back to work doesn’t always do the trick. We need a little help to get us back to that positive mindset.
Just Let Your Pile of Good Things Grow
I’m sure that I’m not the only one who has these moments. And when this happens to me, I remind myself to re-focus my attention on something that brings me back to my happy place.
I’m certainly not a scientist but I do know that the more time you think positive thoughts in your day, the less stress you have in your life. It’s a pretty simple equation: less stress equals more happiness.
Take a look at these apps that will help you create positive habits in your life to help you get through those times when you feel overwhelmed.
1. Happify
How could you not love something with a name like that?
Happify has turned a decade’s worth of research into a series of activities and games that train your brain and build skills for lasting happiness. And they can be used anytime, anywhere—on your smart phone, tablet or computer. Small slices of time can make big-time changes.
2. Positive Thinking
This cool app shows you the steps to take to grow positive thinking. They offer tips to help you develop a positive attitude. You also get the option to find motivational and inspirational quotes if that’s your thing. You can also find this in the Google store for Droid users.
3. Happy Tapper
This one gives you the option of three different apps: Gratitude Journal, Vision Board and Little Buddha { inspirational quotes }.
All of these programs work to create quick 5 minute moments to help you change your thoughts, visualize your dreams and change your life.
4. Attitudes of Gratitude Journal
I personally use this one and I love its simplicity! At the end of my day, I type in a few words to remind myself what I’m grateful for and something that happened during my day to make me smile. Some days, I just upload an image of something that I captured with my camera.
I realize that isn’t one of my usual posts where I give you steps to do something more efficiently or talk about how to use social media marketing. But when I sat down to type today, this is what came out.
I know what really connects us is that fact that we’re all small business owners trying to make our way in this great big social world. And some days, we need to talk about this stuff to keep us moving forward so we can develop that next marketing project or discover a new way to update our tweets.
Some days we all need that little extra something to find our inner coach to remind us why we’re here and why we love what we do.

I took a good hard look at all my social media sites.
After a year of creating this worksheet and typing out my numbers into this table, I put all the information into one place.
Check out this quick video I created to show you how I learned to easily and quickly see what was working and where I needed to spend my time.

Hi Penny, I love your blogs they are so helpful and encouraging. I have a question, I\’m currently working with an ip and coming magazine and the owner wants me to do the social media, and I\’ve posted some topic posts, coming soon, and posts that highlight some of the magazines features, amd some inspiring quotes, but, it doesn\’t seem to be getting any responses to the topics and I\’ve run out of fresh ideas. Do have any tips or advice that can help me? The magazine isn\’t out yet but will be within a month. Thanks in advance for your time,Mia

Hi Mia — can you tell me a bit more about the magazine? Your post sound like a great start but it sounds like you need to add in some more posts to create your social accounts as a resource, a place people want to keep checking whether they see you in their feed or not.
If you can give me a bit more info about the magazine, then I can do a quick brainstorm of topics for you.

Hi Kate – great to see you over here! No, this isn’t my usual type of post but some days the other stuff from my blog where we met spills over into this blog site.
I know how you love this kind of stuff! And that gratitude journal is the one I’ve told you about before – I still use and still love it 🙂

Hey Penney, I just wanted to thank you for your generosity and honesty. I’m sure I am not the only person who could relate to the towels-in-the-dryer story!
My most recent happiness-related discovery is the “inner smile meditation” (discovered through Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Eat, Pray, Love). It’s so simple: just smile “all the way into your liver”. It doesn’t diminish the to-do list but it does make it easier to avoid the black hole of stress-related disconnection.
Sending you and all your readers honor for all you do!
Miriam

Hi Miriam – great to hear from you again!
Inner smile meditation — wow, that sounds interesting! I’ll have to look into that one and see how I can add that into my day.
thanks for the suggestion 🙂

I love this post. I’m going to do the gratitude journal with my daughter as she’s having a rough time. Hopefully it will help us both be more mindful of the good things in life.
Thank you, Cath x

You’re so very welcome! I try to use my gratitude journal at the end of the day every day, even if it’s just write out three good things that happened to me today.
It really does help to end my day thinking about the good in my life instead of worrying about things.

Thanks for your comments! I’ve tried a few times to meditate and it was just a struggle to calm my mind. Maybe I can try it again 🙂
